Deep in the woods surrounding the affluent, rural communities of St. Charles and Wayne, Illinois, an evil presence lurks. The peace and quiet of the far western suburbs of Chicago is abruptly upended when death and terror come to call. A young woman, who has dedicated her life to the welfare of animals, and her faithful companion, a Pit Bull, and former champion fighting dog, are drawn into the horror.
Nancy Bianco, host of WHLP Radio’s, Pets Are People, Too, embarks on another adventure, in this action-packed sequel to author, William F. Amato’s, Heart of a Gladiator. This time, Nancy and, her Pit Bull, Spartacus, are hot on the trail of The Beast of St. Charles.
When one of Nancy’s listeners informs her of a brutal attack on her two Champion Show Horses, Nancy resolves to find the killer and capture it alive.
At first, the local police insist that coyotes are responsible, but Nancy knows better. The evidence, at the scene, convinces her that the killer is far more sinister. Nancy invites, her friend, Dr. Westbrook Von Hautenburg , a cryptozoologist and frequent guest on her radio show, to assist her in investigating the mysterious killings. He, in turn, solicits the help of Arnold Granville, professional trapper and renowned animal tracker.
Nancy finds herself at odds with, Charles Hastings, the Wayne, Illinois, Chief of Police. Evidence mounts that the killer is certainly a large predator, but definitely not a pack of coyotes, much less a lone coyote. What’s worse, is that the killer doesn’t seem to fit into any category or species of animal Nancy or Von Hautenburg are familiar with. It is obviously not indigenous to Illinois, in fact, its origins are completely unknown. Chief Hastings, however, doggedly leads his investigation in the opposite direction.
The clash, between Nancy and the Chief, intensifies when Nancy discovers the body of a homeless man, ripped to shreds, in an abandoned cabin on the banks of the Fox River. Then, Arnold Granville, is slaughtered mercilessly, when he, alone and unassisted, attempts to track the Beast to its lair. Hastings accuses Nancy of recklessly contributing to Granville’s death. She’s arrested and escorted into Chief Hastings’ office.
But Nancy refuses to be intimidated. Her steadfast defiance of the Chief’s efforts to force her to cease meddling in his affairs, finally breaks him down instead. The Chief reluctantly forges an alliance with Nancy. Together, they set out to rid the countryside of The Beast of St. Charles.
Spartacus, however, picks up the Beast’s unmistakable scent. He leads Nancy to the Beast’s hideout. The Beast attacks. Spartacus intervenes, distracting the Beast. The Beast momentarily disables Spartacus, freeing itself to concentrate its full attention on Nancy. Nancy prepares to defend herself and to go down fighting if necessary.

This book sheds a new light on the breed that so many love to hate. It relays the message of how drastically animal cruelty can impact our lives as humans. I read this entire book in one sitting, not because it is an easy read, but because the characters in this book are easy to compare yourself to. I can relate to Nancy. I currently own a Pit Bull, and I promise that the next dog I get will be named Spartacus after the dog portrayed in this story. A great read!!
