The Five Day Novel The How To Guide For Writing Faster Optimizing Your Workflow Writer to Author Book 1 edition by Scott King Reference eBooks

I've read a lot of writing books, and I frequently use them as procrastination for actual writing. I bought this book as a pep talk before starting Nano for the third time without a win! I've honestly been stuck- terrified of the probable time suck of writing novels, not really knowing of where to start. Every book says butt in chair, fingers on keyboard, but nothing else actionable.

That's where this little gem is different!

Scott gives a very clear map of how to actually write a novel from idea to line edit, all the way to publish, minus the book cover of course! There are words of encouragement, and some cheer leading, but mostly it's an actionable check list. This is not a craft book, this is a blue print for how to actually write a novel that takes 5 days and not 5 years!

To echo him, I would encourage you to read through the book in it's entirety first, preferably with your notes from all the other writing books you've read, or his book on screenwriting so that when he says write a treatment(blurb), or an outline you have the steps for your preferred method doing so or the genre you are writing.

The actual written voice of the book was really good. It felt more like a conversation than a lecture. I did not need to google any words or have to read paragraphs multiple times to get his meaning, he made me smile and laugh out loud throughout. He gave me permission to adapt his process to fit me, and reminded me that writing is not just the rat race of publishing, but is an act of creation that should be enjoyed (without sounding a like a new age guru :).

Inspired me to get moving again. Practical tips and the truth about writing fast.
Every author can find something to add to their writing process from reading this book. I was intrigued by what Scott King proposed in the title of this book and bought it on sight. I'm glad I did. While I don't think I'll ever write a novel in five days, I might attempt it in 20-30 days. The best part is the rules still apply. Kudos on an amazing accomplishment and thanks for sharing the process with the rest of us.
First off - It was useful getting to know someone else's approach to writing, especially in a condensed version.

Secondly - The timing could not have been more perfect. I'm working on book two for a fantasy series, and though this book was about writing a book fast and furious, it was also useful for understanding and planning the process of creating a novel start to finish. The lists for redrafting and editing were succinct and therefore valuable. They gave me things to think about while I was writing my novel. Often I break from writing by reading someone else's fiction book. I'm a reader makes sense. The advantage of reading this book was I never left the plot and development of my own story. I used King's process to better think through my own.

Last I learned I do not want to repeat King's experiment, but I can see writing a novel in two weeks
I hesitated to buy this for a few minutes. I mean, really, was I ever going to attempt to write a whole novel in 5 days?
But then I realised that Scott himself doesn't urge you to do this either. The point of the book was to demonstrate that he could do it and what he learned about the sheer logistics of writing a book quickly. It's more of a productivity book, I guess.
I'm pretty sure I would never attempt to write a brand-new book from its initial ideas, plot, characters, etc to edited well enough to go off to your editor in five days, but the idea of writing the first draft in five days has growing appeal. If you've done all the hard work plotting and developing characters over however many weeks or months you need, to then carve out a chunk of time to nail the first draft in just a few days seems like a cool idea and something I could see working in my writing schedule. Scott's suggestions on how he kept his body well as he sat and wrote for hours and hours are really helpful.
An interesting and thought-provoking read.
Drafting a novel in a month, such as for National Novel Writing Month, is a challenge, and takes persistence and hard work. Drafting a novel in a five days might seem like too great a challenge. Scott King went one better and outlined, drafted, revised, and polished an entire novel in five days. Now that is a tall order. But even for those of us, like myself, who don't plan on writing quite that fast, "The Five Day Novel" is a terrific book on how to complete a novel faster and more efficiently. Perhaps not in five days, but a month or two. Imagine, an entire novel, from brainstorm to final polish, faster than you may have thought possible. I've read many great books on writing craft, and King's "The Five Day Novel," ranks with the best for the way he lays out the process steps and mindset needed to write a novel in a short amount of time. Highly recommended!
