Miss Amelia Stalwood may live in London at her absent guardian's townhouse, but she's never actually met any nobility; instead of aristocrats, her closest friends are servants. Quite by happenstance, she's introduced to the Hawthorne family and their close family friend, Anthony, the reformed Marquis of Raebourne. They welcome her into their world, but just as she's beginning to gain some confidence and even suspect that she may have caught Anthony's eye, she's blindsided by an unexpected twist in her situation accompanied by nasty rumors. Will she lose her reputation when the world that has only just accepted her turns its back on her, or will she rest in the support of the friends who've become like family and the man who's shared his faith and captured her heart?

A Lady of Esteem Hawthorne House A Novella edition by Kristi Ann Hunter Religion Spirituality eBooks

It is 1803 in Suffolk, England. 11 year old Amelia is living with Lord Stafford when she gets the news that he is "shipping" her off to London to be taught by a governess. We then fast forward nine years to 1812 where we find Amelia helping her servant friend Emma out by dusting the library. Alas she falls/slips off the ladder and ends up in the arms of a handsome, well dressed stranger! Who is he? Only the notorious Lord Raebourne Rake, monster of the house, otherwise known as Anthony Pendleton, Marquis of Raebourne.

Anthony has been absent from London for two years but can he shed his previous reputation? Now a new creation, trying to live life as a Christian he has a hard time getting Amelia out of his thoughts. Anthony is fascinated by Amelia. She is truly an enigma to him. Does she really know all his servants by name not to mention her own and many others? Amelia is going to be 21 in a few months and has no idea what the future holds for her as it appears that Lord Stafford has forgotten she even exists! Due to an unusual turn of events, Amelia finds herself invited to dinner at Lady Miranda's. An amusing scene! This meal starts up a great friendship between Miranda and Amelia and of course Anthony is never far behind.

When a solicitor turns up at the door just one day before Amelia's first ever ball, is he bringing good or bad news? How does everything turn out? Why does Anthony later call himself a "corn-brained idiot"?

It takes talent to write humor into a story like this without it being corny. This author has done an EXCELLENT job! Found myself smiling/laughing several times. LOVED it! This is a Christian book based on Christian principles so please bear that in mind before purchasing so you will not be disappointed. At the end of the book we are treated to a preview of the next in the series which is Miranda's story.

A Lady of Esteem Hawthorne House A Novella edition by Kristi Ann Hunter Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

This is an e-only novella by Kristi Ann Hunter about the Hawthorne family. I unfortunately read this third in line instead of first. I read A Noble Masquerade first and then An Elegant Façade. You really should read A Lady of Esteem first to familiarize yourself with the characters for the other two books. All books, however, are exceptionally well written and the characters are very interesting and exciting.

Amelia Stalwood is the ward of an eccentric Lord who had had her since she was about nine years old, though he sends her to his London home because he believes children should be raised in London and have a season. However, he seems to forget she even exists and after ten years, Amelia has grown into a lovely young woman.

After her guardian passes away, she is given over to a new guardian, but he believes Amelia Stalwood is supposed to be a child, not this beautiful lady before him. Once things are straightened out and Lord Griffith Hawthorne takes guardianship of Amelia she is introduced into the Ton. There she meets Lord Anthony Raebourn who sweeps her off her feet. Formerly a bad-boy, Anthony has given his life over to God and changed his ways.

Naturally the fall in love and the fun begins. If you like a clean, historical romance novella, you will enjoy this one. Again, though it can stand alone, you really should read A Lady of Esteem first, then A Noble Masquerade then An Elegant Façade. Enjoy!

I received this e-only novella and An Elegant Façade for my honest review. The opinions are purely my own and I was not compensated in any way.
I have to admit that An Uncommon Courtship piqued my interest in reading A Lady of Esteem more than A Noble Masquerade even though Amelia and Anthony only appear briefly in An Uncommon Courtship despite both being mentioned quite frequently. But that's because in An Uncommon Courtship Trent owns the house that Amelia grew up living in. Also because Adelaide's sister is Helena who has a part in A Lady of Esteem. Regardless, I was excited for the free novella giving Amelia and Anthony's story.

Though we're not specifically told the details of the sins of Anthony's past, we do know that he had issues with alcohol and women. He escaped to the country where he spent a considerable amount of time with the Hawthorne family--specifically Griffith. In doing so, he's turned his life over to God and is trying to settle down by finding a wife. And that leads him to return to London.

Amelia is a gentleman's daughter. However, both of her parents have passed. As well as her grandmother. And it seems that she's just gotten passed from one distant relative to the next. The last of which has left her in a house in London where she's come to make a family of sorts out of the household servants. But it isn't just the servants of her own house that she's familiar, but also most of those that she's met and come in contact with.

Amelia and Anthony meet in a couple of encounters that thoroughly embarrass her, but thoroughly intrigue him. And the two begin an unconventional courtship--which seems to be a bit of a theme for this series. Amelia is as pure and sweet as they come. Even though she's not been thoroughly educated in the Bible, it's principles seem to come naturally to her. But Anthony struggles with the man he's been and doesn't want to drag Amelia down with him.

I appreciated the religious themes to A Lady of Esteem perhaps the most out of the three books in this series that I've read. Forgiveness and redemption is something most can relate to.

Favorite quotes
-"Even if you succeed in placing these ballrooms beyond my reach, you will never ruin my life. I do not give you that power."

-How could anyone hear what anyone else was saying? But then again, maybe they didn't care. It seemed more important to be talking than to be heard.

-How could a loving God bring him to the brink of happiness and then snatch it all away? The answer materialized, as if the Lord himself had spoken in Anthony's ear. I didn't take it away. You did.

A Lady of Esteem was short, quick, and thoroughly enjoyable. I liked the characters, the story, the message. A Lady of Esteem gets 3.5 Stars. Have you read A Lady of Esteem? What did you think? Let me know!
